Southern Research (SR) will unveil its new STEM Education Outreach Center at the Birmingham Business Alliance’s Business @ Sunset reception and tour. SR’s STEM Education Outreach Program is involved in a wide variety of initiatives that impact students and teachers in Alabama. Its mission is to enhance STEM education in grades 6-12 by drawing upon the expertise and scholarly contributions of SR scientists and engineers. The research organization is working to achieve its educational mission by engaging students and teachers in STEM activities through summer learning programs, field trips, after-school programming, STEM competitions and science fairs, internships, and professional development workshops for STEM educators. The City of Birmingham won a 2018 Smart Cities Challenge Grant for its plans to use digital technology to advance quality of life, particularly in the areas of public safety, energy and transportation. Representatives of the City of Birmingham, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabama Power will discuss the smart projects already underway in Birmingham and the grant’s resources that will accelerate that work. Participate in a conversation on what Birmingham should do as an innovative 21st century city that incorporates technology to achieve city-wide goals of livability, workability, social equity and economic competitiveness. Before or after this session, you can also learn about Alabama Power’s Smart Neighborhood in a self-guided lobby display.
